Neuroscience Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program

Who we are

Max Planck Florida Institute (MPFI) is offering highly motivated and talented undergraduates the opportunity to take part in cutting edge neuroscience research at its facilities in Jupiter, FL. Our group leaders focus on topics that elucidate key aspects of neural circuit function by utilizing the following approaches: molecular biology, cellular and synaptic function, developmental neurobiology, and genetic models of diseases of the brain. In addition to our research laboratories, MPFI has several core facilities unique to Max Planck Institutes that specialize in advanced optics, new molecular techniques, and electron microscopy.

What to expect

While the majority of the students' time at MPFI will be spent contributing to current projects in our research laboratories, they will participate in additional activities aimed at developing well-rounded future scientists. Our 10-week program begins with a "boot camp" session, to familiarize incoming undergraduates with common techniques employed in neuroscience laboratories. To ensure interns gain experience communicating their results, students must present during a poster session at the end of the internship. MPFI scientists as well as neighboring researchers from Scripps Florida will evaluate the posters and provide feedback. Below is a list of costs covered by MPFI:

  • A stipend of $4,500
  • Housing near the MPFI facilities
  • Food stipend comparable to a meal plan
  • Travel to and from Jupiter, FL

How to apply

MPFI's undergraduate research program aims to identify and cultivate the most talented minds with an interest in neural circuits. We especially seek those who have the potential to become future physicists, engineers, mathematicians, and biologists and who will go on to study the brain using an interdisciplinary approach. All qualified students are encouraged to apply. Strong candidates for the NURF program are undergraduates majoring in neuroscience, biology, physics, or computer science possessing a moderate proficiency in MATLAB. One to two semesters of coursework in neuroscience preferred. Students will ultimately be selected by MPFI Group Leaders. All applicants must apply through the MPFI website and submit the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research statement (400 word maximum)
  • Current and previous research experience (400 word maximum)
  • Unofficial transcripts
  • The names and email addresses of two references (please include in your CV under "References")

Application

Please submit all application materials via our web-based application system. Please mail any additional documents (unofficial transcripts) to the mailing address above.

Please note: the application deadline is midnight EST on February 3, 2012.
