A hallmark of mammal evolution is the cerebral cortex, which is the largest and most complex area of our brains, comprising 20 billion neurons and 60 trillion synaptic connections. Dr. Benjamin Scholl focuses on neural circuits in the cerebral cortex and studies how they operate to give rise to sensory perception, motor control, and cognition. Dr. Scholl will discuss our current understanding about the functions of cortical circuits, as well as, the questions scientists at the Max Planck Florida Institute, and across the globe, are still exploring to increase our understanding of the brain.
